Wall Putty and Primer: Why They Matter Before Paint or Wallpaper
Asian3D Team · 2026-09-19 · 1 min read
Behind every smooth painted wall is good preparation.
What putty does
Wall putty fills small pores and unevenness in plaster to create a smooth surface. It is usually applied in one or two coats and sanded.
What primer does
Primer seals the surface so paint sticks evenly and the colour looks uniform. Skipping it often means patchy paint and more paint used.
Curing and drying
New plaster needs time to cure before putty and paint. Follow the manufacturer's drying times between coats. Rushing causes cracks and peeling later.
Checklist
- Plaster fully cured and dry
- Cracks filled
- Putty applied and sanded smooth
- Primer coat
- Finish coats
Where 3D wallpaper fits
For wallpaper, ask your painter for an oil-based primer coat, then keep the surface clean, dry and smooth (no dust, grease or loose paint). Wait about four to six weeks after painting before installing wallpaper. Browse 3D wallpapers printed to your wall size, or read the full new house interior checklist.
Frequently asked questions
Is putty necessary before paint?
Putty is recommended on interior walls for a smooth finish, especially for sheen paints and wallpaper.
How many coats of putty?
Usually one or two, depending on how even the plaster is.
Can wallpaper go directly on putty?
No. For our wallpapers the wall must be oil-primed, clean, dry and smooth.
